For me, watching The Story of Citizens United brings to life a powerful metaphor of today’s corporation, a legal creation which appears as a robot with people inside of it. In the movie, the robot is programmed to eject the CEO who puts values such as human rights, justice and the environment on par with the pursuit of profit. Certain types of corporation managers can be sued by their shareholders for prioritizing any other value besides profit. While the legal structure of many corporations fits this model, happily there are businesses who are working successfully to change the law and build a greener and more just economy.
After each of our films, some people have asked the Story of Stuff team if we’re against all business. Of course not! We’re against businesses that prioritize only short term profit at the expense of community and environmental well being. We’re upset with businesses that are flooding elections with corporate campaigns to influence election outcomes to favor their narrow interests. And we think corporations which are aggressively marketing junk food to kids are disgusting….. FULL POST »

Our new movie, The Story of Citizens United v. FEC, didn’t just tell the story of corporate influence in American democracy — it also described a couple of key solutions to the problem.

On March 1st, we’ll be releasing the first Story of Stuff movie of 2011—The Story of Citizens United v. FEC. The movie examines the disproportionate influence that corporations exercise in the American political system and was inspired by the disastrous 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision that permitted corporations to spend freely to influence American elections.
We celebrate the fact that our movies have inspired millions around the world—from Brazil to South Africa and Russia to India. While many members of the Story of Stuff community don’t live in the United States, we believe The Story of Citizens United will hold lessons for us all…. FULL POST »
