When we released The Story of Cosmetics a year ago this week to rally support for the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010, we weren’t terribly
surprised when the Personal Care Products Council—an industry front group—called the movie “a repugnant and absurd shockumentary.” After all, for years the multi-billion dollar cosmetics industry had been largely left alone to decide what was safe to put in their products. You know, things like lead in lipstick. Neurotoxins in body spray. Carcinogens in baby wash.

This month, we’re offering Story of Stuff community members an opportunity to go solar with our friends at Sungevity, while at the same time supporting the Story of Stuff Project.
Why Sungevity? Danny Kennedy—one of the company’s founders—has been a friend for 15 years. We worked for the same environmental organization and our daughters even went to preschool together. In the time I have known Danny, he has fought tirelessly for a clean, healthy environment. He worked in solidarity with groups in Nigeria and Indonesia who were fighting mining and oil extraction. He worked with big universities in the U.S. to get them to go solar. He lobbied for better laws and harassed corporations that were trashing the planet….
If you haven’t seen our latest movie, The Story of Citizens United v. FEC, we highly recommend that you do now! If you have watched the movie, you likely already know that it’s time to roll up our sleeves, get to work and get others to do so, as well. One first step that we can take in reclaiming our democracy is signing the petition for a constitutional amendment to overturn this disaster of a Supreme Court ruling….
We know from reading our email, chatting on the phone, and bumping in to you in person that the Story of Stuff Community is full of problem solvers.
We’re greeted daily by folks who’ve figured out solutions to a huge range of environmental and social problems, from too much packaging to too little community.
Now, we want to share these solutions stories with the Story of Stuff community.
This summer, we’re beginning production on The Good Stuff – the first ever Story of Stuff Project podcast series. The podcasts will be short, solutions-focused and inspiring.

After my recent rant against styrofoam, many of you commented on our blog and Facebook Group or emailed us with ideas for combating that indestructible white stuff, as well as other wasteful packaging. We heard about so many good strategies that I thought we should go over some of them in the coming weeks, to learn more about them and figure out which ones we each might want to give a try. Think of them as new tools for our “Make the World Better’ tool boxes.
The strategy I want to talk about today is inspired by Tara Escudero. After she heard about my run-in with the styrofoam mountain at the Clarion Hotel breakfast buffet (link to that blog post?) Tara went above the unresponsive hotel manager to the company’s headquarters. There, she learned that styrofoam plates are on a list of products recommended throughout the entire hotel chain. This one list guides purchasing at hundreds of hotels all across the U.S….
One of the best, and one of the worst, parts of my job is being on the road a lot. I love meeting new people, learning about how sustainability issues are surfacing in different places and seeing what people are doing about them in diverse communities. Usually, these trips fuel my hope, as I see first hand so many solutions being implemented by students, parents, artists, farmers and businesspeople all doing their bit to make the world better.
